Paano nga ba nagsimula?

For the Groom- Benny Manaligod, the frontman of the Filipino indie-folk band The Ridleys, that moment happened by the shore.

Long before the series of successful shows, heartfelt anthems, and becoming one of the most beloved voices in the local indie music scene, Benny was simply a young man trying to balance life, juggling corporate work, thesis deadlines, and late-night gigs while chasing a dream that had not fully unfolded yet.

Then there was Sofia.

During a beach trip with friends, Benny sat quietly by the shore working while Sofia swam freely in the water nearby. In the middle of that ordinary moment, he looked up, took a photo of her, and felt something shift within him. A quiet certainty.

And somewhere between the waves and the stillness of that afternoon, Benny realized he wanted to spend the rest of his life with her. That quiet realization would later become the heartbeat of so many songs that thousands would eventually sing back to him.

Because Sofia was never just part of Benny’s story — she became woven into the very soul of The Ridleys’ music.

Fans lovingly came to know her as the muse behind some of the band’s most cherished tracks. Songs filled with tenderness, longing, devotion, and the kind of love that feels both youthful and enduring.

“Troubadour” became a love letter wrapped in melody.

“Be With You,” originally written privately during the pandemic, carried the intimacy of a promise meant for one person — until it unexpectedly found its way into the hearts of many.

And perhaps that is what makes their story resonate so deeply with people.

It never felt manufactured.

It felt real.

Soft. Steady. Honest.

The kind of love that grows quietly through the years until one day, it becomes home.

What made their story even more meaningful was that both Benny and Sofia came from the University of the Philippines community — a shared chapter that became part of the foundation of their relationship and journey together.

And perhaps that is also why the places they chose for their wedding celebration carried so much meaning.

It wasn’t simply about aesthetics or grandeur. It was about honoring the spaces, memories, friendships, and seasons of life that shaped them individually and together.

Their wedding felt deeply rooted in familiarity, history, and their home (UP).

On January 1, 2024, Benny asked Sofia to marry him — opening another chapter in a story many had already followed through songs, poetry, and moments shared on stage.

Then on August 25, 2024, surrounded by family, friends, music, and the overwhelming love of the Ridleys' community, Benny and Sofia finally said yes to forever.

Their wedding felt less like a performance and more like stepping into one of their songs.

Intimate. Warm. Personal.

A celebration filled not only with beautiful details, but with meaning. From the music played by friends and fellow artists - The Ridleys, Over October, Any Name's Okay, and Coeili - to the poetry, heartfelt moments, and the presence of those who had witnessed their love evolve over the years, every part of the day felt like an extension of who they truly are.

And perhaps that is the beauty of Benny and Sofia’s story.

It reminds us that love does not always arrive grandly.

Sometimes, it begins in quiet moments:
a glance from the shore,
a photograph taken absentmindedly,
a song written for one person,
a certainty felt deep in the heart long before words are spoken aloud.

And sometimes, the greatest love stories are the ones gently written over time — through music, friendship, faith, patience, and choosing each other again and again.

A story beautifully celebrated.
A story still being written.
